I was looking up some doctors in my area on a website titled RateMDs.com when I stumbled across a webpage they'd set up (just for fun) where you can rate Dr. Gregory House just like any other doctor.  There are currently 45 ratings.  Some are utterly hysterical!  Check it out.  Click here.  Enjoy!

I wrote a set of super short (for me) stories for the holiday season.  They're rated no more than PG (for two men kissing), so they're safe for everyone.  I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season, no matter what holiday you celebrate.

ENJOY!

Happy Halloween Everyone!

This is the 70th Anniversary of Orson Welles' radio broadcast of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds.  I really miss hearing the annual Halloween broadcast of the play that a radio station in Princeton aired every year that I lived nearby.  It was a Halloween tradition that everyone loved.

If anyone wants to listen to it (runs about an hour), you can find it in six parts on YouTube.  Just search for "Orson Welles War of the Worlds" and it will come up.

You can also visit the Official War of the Worlds website to read articles about the broadcast, the ensuing panic, and the investigation that followed.  It's not the best website, but it was created by
the West Windsor branch of the Mercer County Chamber of Commerce.  Grovers Mill is in West Windsor Township.

It just isn't Halloween without the Orson Welles radio play of War of the Worlds.

Comment to this post, and I will choose 7 of your interests that I am curious about. You post about them in your own journal and we continue from there.

[info]arhh  picked these:

Tall Ships: All my life I've loved the ocean and was fascinated by the age of sail and clipper ships.  I also was fascinated with whaling, particularly scrimshaw.  Wasn't keen on the killing of the whales, though.  In 1976, my family and I went to New York City for OP SAIL, part of the Bicentennial celebration.  We got to board some tall ships for tours.  One was the USCGC Eagle.  She's the training ship for the U.S. Coast Guard.  She's beautiful.  They gave out these plastic silver-colored coins to commemorate OP SAIL.  I still have them.  That was an amazing day!  I have a set of 12 colored plates and four Wedgewood pottery plates of tall ships/clipper ships hanging on my walls.

Stephen Fry: Back in 1994, a movie titled "I.Q." came out starring Tim Robbins, Meg Ryan and Walter Matthau.  The main reasons I wanted to see it was because it was shot in and around Princeton, NJ, and Matthau played Albert Einstein.  In it, Meg Ryan's character was engaged to a stuffy young Englishman ... played by Stephen Fry!  I thought he was great in the part.  Never thought much about him after that, until House when I learned he and Hugh Laurie are friends.  I've read his autobiography "Moab is My Washpot" and have seen him in other things such as the movie "Wilde", "Jeeves and Wooster", "Blackadder", and "Bones."

Loons:  My favorite bird.  They have an incredibly beautiful, yet sort of mournful call.  I have three stuffed loons (stuffed animals, not real ones!), a big loon like a duck decoy, a carved stone loon, a couple of loon videos, a loon mug, license plates from Maine and Ontario that have loons on them, a loon whistle that lets you perfectly imitate (with practice) all four of their calls, a loon painted sign, and the can that my canned loon (a stuffed animal) came in.  Loons are amazing swimmers, but their legs are set so far back on their bodies that they can barely walk on land.  And they have ruby red eyes.

Museums: Grew up in the greater New York City/Philadelphia area, so always had access to some of the world's best museums.  My parents took me to the American Museum of Natural History when I was about six years old.  When I first saw the dinosaurs, I told them I wanted to work in a museum when I grew up.  I realized my dream 27 years later when I got a job working at the Florida Museum of Natural History.  I worked with fossils (no dinosaurs in Florida) and designed exhibits for open house.  I was in heaven.

La Brea Tar Pits: In the heart of downtown Los Angeles.  Across the street from there, the sidewalk was heaving and tar was oozing out!  I would have taken some of it for my collection of geological specimens, but I had nothing to put it in.  They're fascinating, because prehistoric animals got trapped in the tar and fossilized.  On the grounds is a wonderful museum with fossil animals they found in the pits.  When you stand at the pit, it looks like a lake of water.  You can't tell it isn't by looking, but you can by the smell of the tar.  It's a fascinating part of geology.

Science: The love of my life!  All my life I have been involved in science in one way or another.  I thoroughly enjoy reading about the history of science and medicine.  I especially love particle physics, geology, medicine, and astronomy.  I read mainly non-fiction, mainly science books/biography of scientists.  Yup, I'm a total nerd.  LOL!!!!

Lighthouses: Goes along with my love of the sea and tall ships.  I live 45 minutes from Jupiter Lighthouse.  My home is filled with lighthouses in the form of replicas, switchplates, wallpaper, towels, dishes, salt and pepper shakers, kitchen mitts, tee shirts, books, framed pieces (counted cross-stitch I did and a plaque my dad bought me), license plates featuring lighthouses, and DVDs about them.

It's been over a year since I last posted.  WOW!  Where did the time go?  It's been one insane year.

I have not been absent for a year, though.  I've been actively reading House fanfic and posting comments.  The House communities have really helped me keep sane.

I have been writing fanfic, too.  Just haven't posted anything for a long time.  I have a lot of unfinished pieces that I haven't had time to complete.  Family stuff, health issues, and the errant tropical storm have occupied my time.  I hope to be a little better with posting this year ... if I can remember how to do it correctly.  We'll see how it goes.

Well, now my car battery died!  (Geez, it's enough already.)  Lucky for me, Dad had bought a new battery for his car, thinking his battery was bad.  Turned out it really wasn't.  So, he gave me his.  Fortunately, we use the same size.

I've also been fighting a battle with ants.  I've fed them all sorts of crap that should have killed them, but they just ate it and didn't die.  I don't do pesticides, especially in the house.  They seem to like sweets and grease, so I made up a mixture of juice from canned salmon, sugar and boric acid (used to kill ants, roaches, and silverfish).  They were gobbling the stuff like crazy.  They should have died.  I'll have to try something else.

Scholastic Books delivered!  I received the $50.00 gift certificate via email.  Don't know what I'll do with it yet.

It has been so horribly hot and humid here.  The heat index has been between 100 F. and 110 F.  We haven't had any rain either.  I'm pretty much staying inside until we get a break in this heat.

Well, it's about time for lunch.

Well, got up Monday morning and was getting dressed when my car horn decided to go off by itself.  Couldn't get it to stop, so I had to disconnect the battery.  This happened nearly two years ago after Hurricane Wilma.  There was a short, which I had gotten repaired.  Now it seems the short is back.  Swell.  That's what happens when you're a 14 year old car.

Later that day, Dad came over and checked out the dryer.  He messed around with it a bit, turned it on, and it made the noise a bit then stopped.  He thinks there was something loose in there  (dirt ... whatever) that caused the noise.  Apparently, it got dislodged.  I did wash today, and the dryer was just fine.  HOORAY!!!  That saved me some money.

Dad also located the car horn wire.  We disconnected it and reconnected the battery.  I'm not going to bother fixing it right now.  Got to pay off the new A/C first.  Around here, you rarely need a car horn, unless you want to let someone know you've arrived to pick them up.
That saves me some more money.  YAY!!!!

Today, UPS dropped a package at  my door.  It was the promised special Harry Potter tee shirt that Scholastic said they'd send.  It's black and has the name of the book and the release date on it.  No real artwork, but hey, it's a free shirt.  I'm not complaining!  These screw-ups sure must be costing Scholastic a small fortune.  The letter that came with the tee shirt thanked me for not blabbing the details of the story to anyone and reminded me to watch my email for the $50.00 gift certificate.  I checked out their on line store.  It's all books for kids.  Other than Harry Potter, I have no interest in any of the books they're selling.  (And I have all the Potter books.)  They do have some toys.  I'll have to check those out.  One is never too old for toys!!!!  (Just ask House.  <G>)

Anyway, I was really feeling sorry for myself, so I wrote a story to cheer myself up.  Also, watched two DVDs: "Nanny McPhee" and "The Young Visiters" (Yes, that's spelled correctly!).  Both were very good.  The latter is a Hugh Laurie movie.

There's a House re-run on tonight.  That makes my day!

This has been a weird month.  Really weird.  I'd been having a lot of computer problems.  Things were crashing, pages wouldn't load, etc.  Finally figured that mess out.

I had pre-ordered "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" months ago.  Well, surprise ... it showed up in my mailbox on Tuesday, July 17th!  The release date was July 21st.  So, naturally I started reading it right away.  The next day around 5:00 p.m., I get a phone call from Scholastic Books, the U.S. publisher.  They had my name, phone number, the name of the internet store from which I'd purchased it, and my email address!  They asked me if I had received the book.  I told them yes.  They asked me to set it aside and not read it until Saturday.  Then they told me they're going to send me a $50.00 gift certificate for their internet store and a special Harry Potter tee shirt!  I thought it was a joke, but it's not.  My local news had a story about a young girl who got the same phone call and promise of gifts.  I'll believe it when I see it.  Haven't received anything yet.

Then on Thursday, my A/C died.  I woke up at 7:30 a.m. and it was 80 degrees in the house.  Called the dealer I bought it from.  They sent a man out.  By that time it was about 86 degrees.  Outside, it was over 90.  The compressor had a leak that couldn't be fixed.  Had to buy a new unit.  They couldn't install it until Tuesday.  The man refilled the compressor with freon, then came back on his *OWN TIME* to refill it three more times.  (Heat index had been running between 100 and 106 degrees.)  Yes, there are truly decent people in this world!  My new unit is working just fine now.  YAY!!!!

Saturday, I did my wash, threw the stuff in the dryer and turned it on.  It hummed loudly then sounded like someone was inside the back of the machine beating it with a heavy chain.  The heating element was working and the drum was turning, but something was obviously wrong.  So, I brought the wet wash into the house, set a ladder up in the bathtub of the guest bathroom and hung wet laundry all over it and the towel bars.  Hung the rest of it in the master bath.  Finished Harry Potter later that day.  It was really good, but I'm sad that the series had to end with just seven books.

This past Tuesday, I received "The Last Mimzy" DVD.  Really been wanting to see that movie.  Just as I get into the house from the mailbox, a severe thunderstorm hit.  I had to wait three hours for the storm to pass before I could watch the movie.  I really liked it.

So, anyway, I haven't posted anything in a long time because everything has just been so nuts.  I still have to call someone to fix the dryer, but won't be able to do it until next Tuesday.  I'm also fighting a virus now.  There's been a lot of minor crap, too, but nothing worth mentioning.  Hopefully, things will settle down next week.  I'm so damn tired.  It's raining again, making me want to fall asleep.
